Mission Critical MEP Project Manager -New York City or Boston MA

About the position Bala Consulting Engineers is seeking an experienced Mission Critical Project Manager for its New York office. This role involves leading select Mission Critical projects, developing a specialized group for large-scale projects, and mentoring staff. The Project Manager will provide technical expertise, act as a resource for employees, and support sales efforts by cultivating client relationships. The ideal candidate thrives on challenges, possesses the ability to develop new business, manage internal teams, and execute multiple projects concurrently. A strong understanding of industry standards and the latest technologies in MEP systems design for mission-critical facilities is required, as is the ability to lead projects and teams, and collaborate effectively with clients, owner's representatives, facility engineers, and Bala's multi-disciplinary staff. Reporting to the Director of Operations, this is a dynamic and entrepreneurial position focused on directing and assessing daily operations through collaboration. The role includes reviewing proposals, supervising budgeting and cost analysis, and identifying improvements for higher quality products and services. This is a high-opportunity position with potential for advancement.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a project manager on select projects in the Mission Critical Sector, including newbuilds, renovations, fit-outs, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Act as a client-facing representative, conducting RFP site visits and writing proposals.
  • Manage project planning, execution, and day-to-day operations of internal teams and clients.
  • Provide all management functions including scope responsibilities, client management, scheduling, and financials.
  • Vet company processes and provide input.
  • Assist project managers across all company locations.
  • Develop a core group of assistant project managers capable of independent project execution.
  • Spend most of the time in the local NYC area, with travel to other Bala offices encouraged as needed.
  • Travel nationally to project sites infrequently on an as-needed basis.
  • Act as a technical resource for staff.
  • Manage and schedule quality control reviews to reinforce technical lessons and company processes.
  • Complete internal peer reviews and provide input in multi-discipline page turns across all offices.
  • Manage and schedule page turns prior to all major project deliverables.
  • Provide input utilizing sound engineering principles.
  • Review workforce projections and determine staffing needs.
  • Identify strategies to adjust design schedules to accommodate staffing.
  • Drive ownership, accountability, and culture throughout the company.
  • Interact with partners and executives to advance the firm's growth and quality agenda.
  • Identify potential business opportunities.
  • Work with the leadership team to develop fees for complex projects.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Grow the volume and footprint of the office market sectors.

Requirements

  • At least ten years of experience in engineering consulting or an adjacent field (construction, owner’s representative, etc.).
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or another relevant field from a 4-year accredited university.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Knowledge of building codes.
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and the latest technologies for MEP systems design of Mission Critical Facilities.
