Position Overview The Head of Cargo Marine Underwriting is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall strategy, underwriting discipline, and financial performance of the Cargo Marine portfolio. The role oversees underwriting across Cargo and related marine lines, ensuring profitable growth aligned with the company’s risk appetite. This position requires deep technical expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven ability to balance growth opportunities with disciplined underwriting practices.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership Develop and execute the Cargo Marine underwriting strategy in alignment with enterprise objectives. Identify market trends, emerging risks, and opportunities to expand product offerings and market share. Represent the organization with brokers, clients, and industry bodies to enhance market positioning. Underwriting Oversight & Risk Governance Establish underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, pricing frameworks, and authority structures for cargo marine business. Review and approve complex, high-value, or non-standard risks. Ensure compliance with internal underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, and reinsurance structures. Portfolio & Financial Management Own portfolio performance including premium growth, loss ratios, expense management, and profitability. Partner with actuarial, claims, and finance teams to evaluate trends and adjust underwriting strategy. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance underwriting quality and operational efficiency. Leadership & Talent Development Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing marine underwriting team. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Build succession planning strategies and strengthen technical capabilities across the team. Broker, Client & Market Engagement Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and key clients. Support new business development by providing technical expertise and market insight. Enhance the company’s visibility and reputation in the cargo marine marketplace.
Qualifications
Experience 10–15+ years of marine underwriting experience, with a strong focus on Cargo Marine. Minimum 5+ years in a leadership or management role. Demonstrated track record of managing and growing a profitable underwriting portfolio. Education & Credentials Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field. Professional designations (e.g., CPCU or equivalent) preferred. Technical & Leadership Competencies Deep knowledge of cargo marine products Strong analytical, pricing, negotiation, and decision-making skills. Proven leadership capability with experience building and developing underwriting teams. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. SALARY: The estimated salary range for this position is $300,000.00 to $400,000.00 per year. This is a good-faith assessment of the salary range for this position only.
