Position Overview

The Senior Ride Development Engineer will join arenaflex’s Mechanical Design and Innovation team, playing a pivotal role in conceiving, designing, and delivering world‑class ride systems from concept through installation. This role demands a blend of advanced mechanical engineering expertise, creative problem‑solving, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams through complex, fast‑changing project environments. The successful candidate will be instrumental in translating imaginative ride concepts into safe, reliable, and exhilarating experiences for guests worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end‑to‑end development of new ride concepts, ensuring alignment with creative vision, guest experience goals, and technical feasibility.
  • Extract and translate high‑level narrative and artistic requirements into detailed mechanical specifications, system architectures, and interface definitions.
  • Collaborate closely with creative directors, system engineers, safety specialists, and procurement teams to define functional requirements, performance targets, and compliance criteria.
  • Manage daily activities of a cross‑functional design team, overseeing phases that include concept development, 3‑D modeling, prototyping, detailed design, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning, and hand‑over.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation packages, including design reports, risk assessments, test plans, and as‑built records.
  • Oversee vendor selection, contract negotiations, and coordination of external suppliers for specialized components, ensuring quality, schedule, and cost targets are met.
  • Lead large‑scale verification and validation efforts, coordinating design reviews, simulations, physical testing, and certification processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, applying lessons learned from previous projects to enhance design efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support staff, fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaborative problem‑solving.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field. A Master’s degree is highly desirable.
  • Experience: Minimum 8 years of hands‑on mechanical design experience, with at least 4 years in the design and development of large‑scale ride systems or comparable complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of advanced mechanics, including statics, dynamics, material science, kinematics, stress/strain analysis, and power‑train design.
  • Software Proficiency: Expert‑level command of industry‑standard CAD and analysis tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Navisworks, SketchUp, ANSYS, FEA, and MATLAB.
  • Safety & Compliance: Demonstrated experience developing safety‑critical designs, conducting risk assessments, and complying with international safety standards (e.g., ASTM, EN, ISO).
  • Leadership Ability: Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary engineering teams, managing project schedules, budgets, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication abilities, capable of presenting complex technical concepts to both engineering and non‑technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Prior experience working with arenaflex or other major theme‑park operators, bringing industry‑specific insights into ride development.
  • Professional engineering licensure (EIT, FE, PE) or progress toward certification.
  • Hands‑on experience with prototype fabrication, field testing, and on‑site installation of ride mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques such as additive manufacturing, CNC machining, and robotic assembly.
  • Knowledge of control systems, sensor integration, and real‑time monitoring for ride performance and safety.
  • Passion for storytelling and guest experience, with an ability to merge engineering rigor with creative vision.

Core Competencies for Success

  • Innovative Thinking: Ability to generate original solutions that balance thrill, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Analytical Rigor: Strong problem‑solving skills, leveraging simulation and data‑driven analysis to validate design decisions.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable working in fast‑paced, cross‑functional environments, building consensus among diverse stakeholders.
