Friday Harbor Laboratories (FHL) has an outstanding opportunity for a COMPUTER SUPPORT TECHNICIAN 2 to join our team. (Computer Support Technician 2 (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv)) About this Opportunity This position is on San Juan Island, 100 miles north of the Seattle area. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Computer Support Technician 2 is responsible for providing technical support in the day-to-day operations of computer equipment, platforms, and tools used by employees, students, and visitors at a world-renowned marine education and research station.

Key Responsibilities

Provide proactive IT support (50%) Assist staff, faculty, students, and visitors with using and troubleshooting common IT equipment, tools, platforms and products; Provide hands-on and written guidance for staff, faculty, students, and visiting groups on audio/visual communication tools such as Zoom room, microphones, etc.; Consult with course instructors to determine course setup and equipment requirements; Provide info sessions, such as instructor and student orientations to FHL IT equipment and support; Maintain current documentation for computing and audio/visual equipment maintenance and use; and Inform campus community members of IT services available and of upcoming changes, alerts, outages, restoration, etc. using a variety of standard communication tools. Support and maintain workstation equipment and common peripherals (20%) Troubleshoot, maintain and update common-use and staff computers, printers and associated equipment; Maintain, track inventory, and coordinate ordering of IT consumables and spares necessary to sustain the computing environment and stay current; and Plan, budget for, and seek funding opportunities for common use computing equipment and services. Provide IT support for facilities (15%) Monitor, prevent, and react to alarms from monitoring tools such as those that support Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Fire Alarms, Water Detection Alarms, and Building Security Systems; Communicate and work with UW IT and College of the Environment IT on issues related to UW-wide services; Assist with IT infrastructure projects as required by UW IT and/or as directed; Assist with IT preparation for emergency response and recovery; and Oversee FHL IT security and policies under the guidance of UW IT. Support network operations (5%) Use UW networking tools to prevent and identify failures and report to network operations staff; Communicate network service-related impacts to the FHL community; Review any network service-related impact tickets from the NOC. Assist UW NOC personnel with troubleshooting efforts. Inform supervisor, UW IT and/or the College of the Environment IT as needed; Act as primary interface for IT vendors including those who need site access or site logistics assistance; and Directly interface with local telecommunications providers for POTS issues onsite. Support local server (5%) Manage and support local Windows, Mac OS, and Linux servers with minimal supervision; Manage and support Virtual Machine environments including management and support; and Manage server Command Line Interfaces including IDRAC. Related duties as required (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience as a Computer Support Technician 1. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.

Preferred Qualifications

Two or more years of experience and/or training in computer maintenance technology; Associate’s degree in computer maintenance technology or related field; Familiarity with cat 6a cabling and fiber optics; Familiarity with network equipment, software, VLANs and network testing software; Experience troubleshooting and maintaining networked printers; Familiarity with scientific, virtualization and/or genomics software; Familiarity with network tools such as DHCP, SMB, AFP, SMTP, rsync, SFTP, SSH; Three years of IT experience such as installing and/or maintaining software, hardware, or network infrastructure equipment, or providing customer support in IT; Previous work experience in MacOS and Windows environments; Previous work experience with scientific equipment interfacing computer controllers; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; AND/OR Familiarity with various audio and video media formats.
