Research Associate

Remote · USA Full-time New today

Research Associate Department: Carbon Removal Standards Initiative Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time Location: Remote Reporting To: Executive Director Compensation: $85,000 / year Description About the Organization CRSI is a nonprofit that uses science and policy to unlock carbon removal opportunities in every sector of society. There is a 5–8 billion ton gap between the amount of carbon removal we need and the amount of CDR current policy approaches can deliver. Filling this gap requires a creative approach to deployment, embedding CDR solutions in every sector of society and leveraging existing physical and policy infrastructure to do more with less. CRSI is a small group of dedicated folks from a variety of backgrounds including chemistry, mathematics, communications, and more. Our work focuses on scaling integrated carbon removal solutions: we bridge knowledge gaps between CDR and other industries, provide technical guidance to policymakers and regulators, and catalyze research at nonprofits and universities. Since our launch in the summer of 2024, we’ve helped shape the future of carbon removal, from concept to implementation. We published research and guidance on leveraging carbon removal to support both agriculture and coastal resilience, emphasizing what CDR can offer farmers and coastal communities. We also launched C-QuIP, our interactive digital tool that tracks progress and intersections across CDR policy, integrations, and quantification. We’re continuously engaging with efforts across and beyond the US, and will serve as a lead author on the upcoming 2027 IPCC Methodology Report on CDR and CCUS. Our Values At CRSI, we celebrate — Curiosity and humility. We always have more to learn, and we are eager to do so (and try to assume the same for others). Equanimity and pragmatism. We try to see and navigate the world as it is, not as we want it to be or as we’ve been programmed to see it through the dominant culture. Clarity and collaboration. We can work effectively and authentically with anyone and each other, as long as we are clear on our values, goals, strategy, and tactics. Mission driven and action oriented. Our goal is to build systems of accountability that enable the world to use carbon removal as a tool for climate justice. No project or product defines us, as long as we are taking meaningful action to build a CDR sector that is worthy of public investment. Position Summary: CRSI is seeking a Research Associate to work closely with the Executive Director to support CRSI’s day-to-day work. This role includes a wide range of activities: policy research, data analysis, programming, product development, long-form writing, public speaking, and strategy support. Primary Responsibilities Contribute to CRSI’s multi-disciplinary research projects, including literature review, informational interviews, and data analysis. Projects often span physical science, engineering, and policy topics. Support the development and maintenance of C-QuIP, CRSI’s public database of CDR information. The Research Associate will be responsible for the overall performance of the tool, plus maintenance of at least one specific section of the database, based on their past experience and knowledge. Respond to time-sensitive, rapid-turnaround inquiries from teammates and project partners on current events, policy developments, and scientific uncertainties. Translate CRSI’s work into written materials and data visualizations for internal and external audiences, including academic publications, conference presentations, and mainstream writing (e.g., blog posts). Represent CRSI at industry conferences and help execute CRSI-hosted events, including virtual webinars and in-person convenings. Other duties that are reasonable and consistent with this position. The Ideal Candidate This person will be a strong utility player, comfortable juggling multiple projects and excited to move quickly from questions to execution. We expect this person to be comfortable with scientific research practices, language, and tools. This person is highly collaborative and always willing to try, even when they’re not sure where to start. They contribute proactively to cultivating the team’s curiosity and knowledge about carbon removal by sharing articles, hosting book clubs, and supporting team cohesion. While comfortable using AI to support their work, this person is skilled at researching, writing, editing, and speaking without it. Experience Requested We are excited to meet candidates with a range of professional backgrounds spanning climate, academia, engineering, mathematics, or a related field. We expect this role is best suited for a candidate with 4–5 years of combined university and on-the-job experience. Generally, we consider years spent working towards bachelor's and master's degrees at 50% compared to years of direct job experience (e.g., a two-year MS degree = one year work experience). Workplace, Compensation & Application Workplace & Travel: All team members work remotely in the US with occasional travel (4-6 times per year) for events and in-person meetings. Compensation: The salary for this role is $85,000 annually. CRSI covers 100% of employee medical, dental, and vision premiums, matches 401(k) up to 3.5%, and offers generous vacation and sick leave policies. How to Apply: To apply, please visit our Applicant Portal, where you will be asked to submit your resume and answer a few questions in lieu of a cover letter. We respectfully request no follow-up calls or emails. Multiplier is committed to creating an inclusive, equitable, and accessible application process for all candidates. We recognize that the traditional hiring process can create barriers. If we can support your participation in the job application or interview process by providing specific assistance or accommodation, please reach out to [email protected]. Requests for accommodations are confidential and will not impact your candidacy. Apply To This Job
